First time cup user - Ouch!!

Okay so after much annoyance with tampons (too dry) and pads (too messy and leaky), I did some research online and found out about menstrual cups. Hooray!

I bought the Diva (small) from a local store here, and since I'm due for my period any day now, I decided to try it out ahead of time. Ouch!! I tried it the first day, with no success at all (much muttered swearing and pain). I tried it out the second day, after a very relaxing hot shower - still no luck for about 2 hours! You might think that's madness, but I was pretty determined to figure it out (more on that later).

My main problem was that the cup kept snapping open prematurely - jebus it hurt like crazy!! I tried all sorts of folds (the C-fold is definitely the worst for me) and all sorts of positions (sitting, standing, squatting, standing with one leg propped up, lying down, lying down with my legs ungraciously thrown up in the air) - not exactly my most shining moment. To give you an idea of my size, I'm 25yrs, 5'3 and 100 lbs - when I use(d) tampons, I'd usually go for the medium ones in plastic applicators, since the large ones felt uncomfortable. Anyway, I eventually managed to coax the Divacup in. However, I consider it possibly mostly a fluke. Does anyone know how to make it not hurt on the way in, and also how to keep it from snapping open before it's in? My thumb was sore from pressing down so many times while holding it, to make sure it didn't pop open. Other than that, I thought it was pretty huge and not as flexible as I would've liked (my first thought upon opening the package: "Christ. There's no way this thing is going to fit in me, even after folding it.")

My other issue is that I'm going to be spending a lot of time in the pool and sea over the next few months - swimming, surfing and scuba diving! Hence the quest to find something reliable. This may sound like a silly question, but if I happened to flip upside down underwater or even do a headstand on land, and then flip the right way up again, would I be likely to experience any leaks?? On a side note, if you put it in as a dry run, how long before you need to take it out again?

Sorry about all the questions, but this is extremely new to me! Since I'm going to be in the pool tomorrow for a couple hours, and suspect my period might creep up on me either tomorrow or the next day, I think I'll keep it in during that time, just to be safe. This is for a scuba training session, so I can't reschedule!
