Stem Trimming

I bought my Mooncup a few weeks ago and tried many unsuccessful and painful dry runs... >____< Then I got my period today and decided to try my Mooncup again and... it went in! XDXD

But I have a question about the length of the stem, is the stem supposed to be totally inside the vagina? As in, inside past that circle of muscles? I'm scared that if I trimmed it too short I will have trouble pulling it out... Right now the stem extends outside the circle of muscles but it doesn't really bother me. Should I trim it further? Why should the stem be trimmed so that it's inside the vagina? Is it for hygenic reasons?
