Topaz Goold
Hi. Topaz here. First time Diva cup user. I regret this cup so much - clearly the fit isn't right. I did so much research! Such a let down. I'm going to get a longer cup with a longer stem for my next cup. This is just silly.

So, there I was. Nearing the end of period. I am thrilled with the diva. It's easy to put in and take out (until now), convenient and environmentally responsible. So much better than tampons. I have a heavy flow - Diva said no problem. Took care of me really well. No leaks even when riding my horse and biking.

Last night I thought I heard the pop. Now I'm sure I didn't. I woke up this morning and the cup went poof just totally vanished up my vag. And I'm not a virgin so I sent in the troops.

Excavating in the bath didn't work. Bearing down didn't work. I can't even find the stem. I don't know if it's upside down or not.

The second brave soldier I sent up after my fingers was a spoon. Went up along the back wall to get it out. Squatted to shorten the canal. I felt something that was hard and plastic-feeling. Eureka! So it's up there. Waaaay up there. Somewhere in my nether regions.

I drank a vodka cooler to help loosen the pelvic floor muscles. Now (at 1:30am my poor neighbours) I'm breaking out the vibrator. I read the whole internet on this subject and figured a little muscle-loosening alcohol can't hurt.

I already did the panicking/thinking I'd have to go to the ER. Now I'm just content to let it sit and try everything you guys throw at me. Please help.

Things I've tried:
- warm bath
- drinking alcohol
- getting turned on/masturbating
- using a spoon (I felt it last night for a second)
- using a spoon again
- using a plethora of different spoons
- squatting, lying down, birth position, on my side, standing
- relaxing
- sleeping - giving my vag a break to try again this morning
- another hotter bath
- lots of lubricant
- a longer spoon
- (while drunk) tried to get my hand inside to find it. No luck and it killed like a Mofo.

Things I am going to try:
Having my bf help (poor guy)
Buying a speculum at my local kink store to see if we can locate it that way
Clitoral stimulation (again) to try and loosen up the area around it.

Thanks in advance. This community is awesome.

I was going to reccomend a warm bath and relaxing your muscles, but it sounds like you have tried that. Have you tried taking it out during a bowel movement?

Edited: I asked a question that was answered after I read the post more carefully.

Also, Bree had her diva cup flip upside down and she talks about it in this video. Maybe it will help you with some tips just in case you find that your cup has flipped as well.

Oh boy, I hope you get it out soon!

"I'm going to choose an OBGYN and then have them choose a cup for me based on my anatomy."

Based on your experience with your cup, "he" will tell you not to use one at all. And then you will probably come back here and tell us not to use them because "my doctor said they're bad."

Just because it didn't fit you well and didn't work out for you doesn't mean cups don't work fine for others.

Your Diva is a long bodied cup with a short stem. Check the size charts that include stem lengths found at the Community FAQ to compare other brands. Off the top of my head, the Lily is significantly longer because of its long integrated stem. Others are just a little.

But I think the problem is your technique rather than the cup. I'll bet once you figure out how to remove your next cup, you'll be able to remove your Diva without issues too.

Nothing against cups. I expected a learning curve
Actually the doctor I'm going to see soonish (about a different form of birth control) is a woman.

What I meant by the comment about anatomy - she can look up in there and let me know more about my cervix and my shape. So I'll have a better idea what other cup I can try.

The cup worked amazingly well for me (as I said in my post) I am determined to find my perfect cup and don't mind having some bumps along the way.

I just don't want to go to hospital.

I was thinking about the one where the stem is a loop. What's your experience with that one? My flow is a little heavy - 5-7 tampons a day plus backup pads - and the cup was over half full for the entirety of my period.

Basically the canal curves and the diva is up the curve right now having a party. So to even slightly feel the actual plastic with a long spoon I have to push a large section of body tissue and vaginal wall towards the front of my entrance.

I slept with it in - 2 nights now and one day so far - and am now taking another warm bath to see if that helps at all.

Alcohol did nothing except lead me to create a menstrual cup group on Fb at 3am. So there's that option gone as well.

Re: Nothing against cups. I expected a learning curve
Well, my point was that it doesn't take a doctor to figure out that while the long Diva fit you well on your short-vag days, it's not long enough for last long-vag days because you can't reach it. So therefore you need to adjust your removal techniques and/or find a longer (body plus stem) cup.

And because most doctors don't know anything about cups or their dimensions, they won't be able to advise you. Again, check the various size charts at the Community FAQ for dimensions. Charts that includes stem lengths might be more helpful than those that don't.

The one with the ring -- you're probably thinking of the Meluna. Looking at the charts, the longest one is about the same length as your Diva, just 1mm shorter. Tying a string to the ring for removal might work. Or it might create suction as you pull it out. Melunas have only 2 small anti-suction holes. You might want to add a couple more if removal proves difficult.

Same with your Diva. It has notoriously small anti-suction holes. Once you get it out, enlarging them might help with future removals.

PS - Having been in you for 24+ hours, it probably won't smell good when you get it out. That's OK. Wash it well and put it on a sunny windowsill for sunshine and fresh air. It'll be fine.

Ah fair enough.
My removal technique was fine until the cup decided to journey all the way up in there.

Yes I am planning to add more holes.

I still have no idea how to get it out though.

I'm going to try squatting and bearing down again. Plus the spoon. Hopefully something happens.

I haven't found anybody else on here that has lost their cup as in been unable to feel it at all... I went back quite a long way through this tag.

Re: Ah fair enough.
The fact that you can't feel it at all makes me wonder if it managed to turn inside-out or turn sideways up inside you. That seems uncommon but not unheard of. In the YouTube video linked to up above, I believe Bree describes having a difficult time feeling her cup at first. She has a low cervix and has said that the Diva is a close fit for her, so if something similar happened to you and your cervix is higher, that could explain some of the trouble. Again, I think it's rare for a cup to contort itself, but it probably happens.

Good luck. I'm afraid I don't have much advice about removal.

Did you get it out? If you want to talk to someone more frequently for support, you are more than welcome to message me and we can exchange emails. But I hope you figured it out already :)
elisamba on May 17th, 2015 07:01 pm (UTC)
Arousal will only make your cervix move higher (vaginal tenting) so I don't recommend that.

Squat, try inserting your thumb first, and then bear down. Once you feel it don't immediately try to pinch it, but visualize it staying in place while you release the muscles and then get ready to bear down again.

You sound like a good candidate for the medium LuvUrBody, AFAIK the longest cup.

Edited to add: just remembered this post from a few months back. http://menstrual-cups.livejournal.com/3374087.html

Try to give birth to it in short but bowel moving motions. I had a drama with my first cup small sckoon on a dry run. Hopeless. Husband with tweezers pinging my as the tail is snappy. Now I'm fine. But I would recommend the small sibell for high tail end,its got 4 nice sized holes, the body isnt long (Ive tried all lengths including LUB medium) but the tail is, and its soft enough for the suction not to be a problem at all, so removal is the best Ive tried on travelling light days.
Till then, plenty Of bowel movements as the motion I find helps to break the seal and internally brings it down

Still no sign
My bf helped me do a thorough investigation looking for It. No sign of it. I'm going to sign up with an OBGYN and see her this week hopefully.

Thank for all the advice.

I really hope you get the cup out soon topaz and it hasn't put you off cups for life. You seem like you are taking it in your stride - I would be freaking out!

Yikes! Sounds like my first experience with a Meluna. I know it's not funny but I laughed because I enjoy your writing style!

It's definitely possible that the Diva has tilted sideways, making it a lot shorter effectively (my cervix is WAY off to the left so if yours is just a little more sideways than mine a cup could be sitting at a greater than 45 degree angle...making it hard to get to)

Once this is all sorted out, I'd definitely recommend the Lily, the Victoria's Love (90mm w stem!) or the iCare (83mm with stem, same design as Diva basically but softer and longer stem). The Diva's 70mm is borderline too short for me--I don't own a Diva but have a Rainbow of the same length and wish it were a little longer. Love my Si-Bell but it sounds like you want something even longer.

My suggestion, IDK if this will work...I don't know much about lube, (being a virgin and all, lol). But try putting a ton of lube up there, maybe squirt the bottle up their. Invert yourself so the lube settles around the cup. Then turn right side up and spend 2-3 minutes with about a minute break in between pushing the cup out. Squat and bear down, push, push push, like your'e birthing a baby and then relax take a brief break and repeat, Do it for about 30 min total and I bet the cup will either be almost out or at least reachable. Hope this helps
