I'm in my 30s and I've had 2 kids. I'm also one of those unfortunate people whose flow is a DELUGE and accompanied by a lot of nasty side effects. Using a cup has been probably the single most life-changing awesome that has ever happened to me and I cannot thank the person who recommended it to me enough. ardwynna_m I feel lucky to live when I do.

However, the Diva has never been perfect for me. It spots a little when only partially full and leaks outright the higher I go. Also, due to the rate of flow, there's no way it could possibly last me eight hours as advertised. I basically have to clean it out every time I go to the bathroom, and I still use pads as backup.

Any suggestions? I'm not even really sure what exactly what my problem is.

The Diva is a medium capacity cup (assuming you have the large), about 25 ml. If the length is comfortable for you, I would recommend the Gaiacup for a similar length cup with 30 ml capacity. It is softer, but with six holes, unfolds just fine, for me at least. If you feel like you could go a bit shorter, I would also recommend the large Fleurcup. It is more bell-shaped and a no-fail where opening is concerned.

As for the leaking, as one woman says on the French MC forum, she figures deluge-like flow is sort of like setting a garden hose on a wine goblet: that some will go in, but some will inevitably escape. Her goldilocks is the large Yuuki, I have no experience with that cup. She changes every 1.5 hour, but says it is still an improvement over what she went through before. She has fibroids. If not already done, a gyno's visit might help determine the cause of your heavy flow.

I don't have a deluge but the diva cup lasted me about 2 hours on day 1. I have a Large soft yuuki now and it's definitely bigger. I get about 3-4 hours out of it on my first day (more as the day wears on). It opens more easily for me than the diva did due to the slightly larger holes. If the diva is a good length for you, then I highly recommend it. Mind you, I still wear a pantyliner on day 1 because I do get the occasional trickle. If you wanted a firmer cup than the diva the yuuki comes in a firm version as well (you can often buy packs of 1 soft and 1 firm yuuki on ebay direct from the company).

As you currently use a Diva I'm guessing you have a high cervix like myself so I'd absolutely recommend a large si-bell, I don't gush (I don't think? When I start I do so very abruptly with no warning!) but I do have 2 very heavy days and (touch wood) have never experienced a single leak and only have to empty 2-3 times a day!

as others have said, the problem is that the Diva (despite what divacup say...) is a medium capacity cup at best, and you have a very heavy flow. :)

High capacity cups are usually ones with high airholes and a rounded bottomed shape so look at the Large Fleurcup, Large Si-bell, Large Mami cup and the new LuvUrBody cups (the large is shorter than the medium, but are both very long and hold LOADS 38-40mls to the airholes!) have a look at the photos here, the large might be a better fit for you depending on how high your Diva sits: http://www.femininewear.co.uk/large-luv-ur-body-comparison-photos-91-w.asp and here: http://www.femininewear.co.uk/medium-luv-ur-body-comparison-photos-90-w.asp

'I'm not even really sure what exactly what my problem is. ' - Above, you wrote: '... flow is a DELUGE ...' - I think that's your answer right there, sorry, as someone else said it may be worth finding out if there's a medical reason or if you're just at the heavy end of normal.

I had a copper IUD for a while and there were two days a month then that were all SCARLET WATERFALL OF DOOM and my mooncup couldn't keep up so I got a large fleurcup, and went from 'maybe 3.5 hours if I'm lucky' to '4.5 hours, no problem', and stopped having to wear pads at work. And then I went on the pill for a while and suddenly understood all these people who ask questions like 'is it ok to leave my cup in all day without changing it?'. Basically, advertised duration is for average flow, if you're kicking out too much stuff to fit, it's not *going* to fit.

I don't like the fleurcup as much as the mooncup - not quite as easy to get it open, not as easy to remove, sometimes I can feel it (although it's not uncomfortable) - but I still use it on heavy days because of the additional capacity. Good luck with finding something that works for you better than the diva.

I used the Large Diva for more than a year and loved it, but like you, wondered if there might be something better. I gave the Large Fleurcup a whirl and found it to be my goldilocks cup. I've even started braving going without a backup cloth liner - that's how great it's been for me. I'm 42, 2 kids, 5'5", 165-ish (give or take 10, you know how that goes), pretty active lifestyle when I'm not chained to my desk at work. Hope that helps!

The "problem" (not really) is that you've misinterpreted the capabilities of the cup. 12 hours is the maximum amount of time you should leave it unattended on a light day -- not that it will hold 12 hours worth of flow, especially not heavy flow. If it's full, it's full. And for some of us, that only takes a couple of hours (which is still longer than a disposable -- yay!)

Many of our cups don't fill "to the brim" because despite what the instructions and illustrations show, ANY cup will settle (O) around our cervix and some cervixes are (what we call) "dangly" so they take up room in the cup.

If you want a cup with a higher capacity, there are several size and capacity charts at the Community FAQ. While you're there, also read the post about "Myths" to dispel some of the misinformation that came with your cup's (every brand's) instructions.

Some of the leakage that you're experiencing sounds like what we (ahem) affectionately call "residual slobber." That's the flow that winds up in the nooks of your vag during a change and then leaks out. There are ways to combat slobber at the leaking tags, but I am one of the many who was never able to conquer it fully so adding a liner was a small price to pay for all of the other benefits of cups.

All in all, you've got it. You've figured out the hard parts, including when to attend to it. Congrats! You're officially a successful cupper! :o)

I would recommend the Luv Ur Body cup. I had a MiaCup that was my Goldilocks until I discovered the Luv Ur Body cup. I have a large which is a little shorter than the medium and wider. It is firm and soft. Firm enough to open well, but soft where it is so comfy to wear. The large holds about 35mls. I can go all day with this cup and I have NO leaks. I also love that it stays in place while exercising and using the rest room. For me the softer cups would slip when going to the rest room or exercising. So I couldn't wear my MiaCup while exercising so I would put on my MCUK. Now with Luv Ur Body I don't have too! It is absolutely amazing.

I am suddenly ridiculously interested in this cup! I'm pretty sure I was talking to you about bladder pressure with my diva cup and you recommended the mia. Can I ask how soft the Luv Ur Body cup is in comparison to your mia? Thanks!
curlydevacurlydeva on January 10th, 2014 09:05 am (UTC)
Hi. The Luv Ur Body cup is a little bit firmer than the Mia but still pretty soft. To me it has a little bit of a firm rim. I find it much easier to open than my MiaCup. The Miacup I would have to help it open. The Luv Ur Body cup has a unique shape to it and four holes around the cup not to big or to small and the cup opens well. I use the seven fold and it works great. The steam although I could trim it it is so flexible it doesn't bother me at all so I think I will leave it. I am so happy I made the investment it was well worth it! In my opinion the Luv Ur Body cup has a perfect balance of soft and firm. For me I have truly found my last cup. I will not have to purchase or be curious about another as Luv Ur Body cup is a winner in my book! I hope that helps.

Yes that's great! Thank you so much. I think I am sold! Now to pick a size!
curlydevacurlydeva on January 11th, 2014 04:52 am (UTC)
Awesome let us know how you like it. I got the Large it is a little wider but shorter than the medium and holds a little more. It is longer than my any of my other cups, large Meluna, Large Miacup, Large, Keeper, large MCUK and Medium Yukki. Happy cupping! :)
tobilei on January 12th, 2014 06:47 am (UTC)
I will! Mind you, the time it takes me to make these decisions it might be a year down the track :P I'm tempted by the medium. My large yuuki feels pretty wide for me already so going a little wider again is a bit intimidating! I do like the fact that the medium is longer.
curlydevacurlydeva on January 12th, 2014 07:14 pm (UTC)
Well the good thing is the cup will wait for you. :) There was a sale on the Luv Ur Body Cups. You might want to check and see if it is still going on. Yea I was worried about the cup being wide and feeling like I am filled up or it pressing on my behind but the cup is soft enough where it doesn't feel like that at all. My Yuuki cup was way to firm my least favorite cup in the world! Go with you gut on the size and compare to others. I got the Large due to the cup was designed for those with fibroids and edometriosis in mind which causes heavy bleeding. I have fibroids which was one of the reasons I was attracted to the Luv Ur Body cup.

I have not tried the Diva but I also have a very heavy flow and the longest I have gotten from any cup (I have tried many) is 2.5 hours on a heavy day my favorite is the xl Meluna.
