Hey! long time lurker, 25, basically not a virgin (5 years ago still counts right? haha), no kids, using meluna medium for the 3rd successful cycle.

On heaviest days I notice I have to sometimes empty the cup every other hour because I feel leakage/leakage did happen. but when I take it out, it's sometimes not even near max capacity under the holes. Am I doing it wrong, or sounds possible and not to worry (especially if it's only a couple days ish) I know, realistically sometimes you might have to empty it earlier than 12 hours... just wondering if that sounds alright. haha. on other days I could probably go longer (4-5 hours?) before inevitable maximum capacity!

other than that, I have been loving using a cup and not having to worry about TSS! I have noticed no irritation after cycle ends, and sorta getting the hang of using cloth pads as backup. :)

Happy Halloween too!

When I first started using mine (Diva Cup, if it matters), I'd sometimes have insertions that didn't go right. It felt like everything was in place, but half an hour later I'd have to go to the bathroom because I could tell blood was leaking out. It turns out the cup was only partially covering my cervix and was squished way at the top. Twisting the cup doesn't help horribly much for me, so I usually put my forefinger or middle finger all the way up and press on one of the "points" at the top of the cup to make sure I get a rounded seal rather than a < > shaped one.

My other thought would be that if you're sure the seal isn't an issue, maybe when you break the seal blood leaks out before you get a good look at the cup. On my heaviest days I sometimes empty it every hour or two because otherwise it will overflow. I tend to be kind of messy when I break the seal, and usually some of the blood spills out before I actually get the cup out completely so by the time I get a look, it's only half or three quarters full.

There are probably other possibilities but those are the first that come to mind for me.

Ooh that's what I was thinking, possibly it wasn't covering my cervix properly. I guess I should really get all up in there and try to figure out these possiblities. hah.

If you compare your cup to others at the size and capacity charts, even though it's called a medium, its dimensions make it more like a small. Its capacity is pretty good but if you have what we call a dangly cervix, it will take up room in the cup and that will diminish it by however much it dangles.

On the other hand, since you're getting 4-5 hours out of it on your heaviest days despite dangling into it, that's not so bad. You should (we all should) be drinking enough water/liquids that we should need to go pee before then anyway. 12 hours isn't the expected amount of time between emptyings, it's the maximum recommended time that you leave it unattended.
