A couple months ago I was trying to figure out a larger capacity cup to buy. I currently have a new-style medium Meluna classic, and it was great for the first 8-10 months. But my doctor has me on iron supplements now, and my periods are undeniably heavier. I've been putting off buying a new cup, since they're kind of pricey, but it's become obvious that I just have to suck it up and get a new one.

I have a low cervix, so I've been having a lot of trouble finding a short cup that has a higher capacity than my Meluna. I've narrowed it down to a large Fleurcup and a Ruby cup, I think. I had also considered a large Juju. Much as I want to buy Australian made where I can, I just can't afford $60 for a single cup. I can get TWO Fleurcups for less than the price of a single Juju, so unfortunately I've had to rule that one out.

Fleurcup pros - larger capacity. Cheaper. Pretty colours.
Fleurcup cons - longer.

Ruby cup pros - Shorter. Donates one cup to a girl in Kenya. I approve of this kind of thing.
Ruby cup cons - Smaller capacity. No pretty colours. More expensive (but the abovementioned donation cancels this out for me, really)

I really don't know which to choose. The larger capacity should be a winner, but I'm a bit concerned about the extra length. I also really want to go with the Rubycup because I like that they donate a cup. I think I'm definitely leaning in the Ruby cup's direction, but I just want someone to make up my mind for me! Or offer an opinion, at least! :)

ETA: I ended up buying a Fleur because it was the cheaper of the two, but I will most likely end up buying a Ruby as well because I really can't decide between them.

Hi,
I'm thinking maybe the longer length of the fleurcup isn't going to suit you as well from what you say? The Ruby cup capacity still looks pretty good to me looking at comparison charts.

I'm quite new to using cups but I think length is a major factor worth considering...

Hope this helps!

Maybe someone with experience of using either of those cups will give you some advice - anyone?

Yeah, this is very much how my thinking is leaning.

What about a Natu?

I did think of that, but it's the same length as a Fleur and more expensive, so it got eliminated early. I don't like to put a price factor on something I'll be using so much, but it has to be done. I'm willing to pay more for the Ruby because they donate a cup, but it's still technically out of my price range.

From the size charts, it looks like the Ruby might actually have a higher capacity than the large Fleur, in practice (34 for Ruby, 29-30 for Fleur): http://sizecharts.livejournal.com/ Even disregarding the "to holes" and "user reported" capacities, the difference of 1ml shouldn't be much, and a too-long cup will give you enough grief that 1ml extra capacity probably wouldn't be worth it.

(I do like the look of the Ruby as well, but unfortunately I have the opposite problem--an extremely high cervix--so my cup options are somewhat limited there!)

This is what I was thinking too. I think Ruby might be a winner.

Your measurements for pro/con lengths don't measure up.

The medium MeLuna you have now is 44x51. (Width x Length)

The large JuJu is only 1mm shorter at 46x50.
The large Fleur is only 1mm longer at 46x52.
The Ruby is a step longer at 45x55.

Medium Melune is 41x48 according to both charts (it's the large with the dimensions you listed), which makes the Fleur 4mm longer. Doesn't sound like much, but I'm still not sure.

The Ruby says 45x51 on the capacity chart, where did you find 55mm for a length?
Eireinneireinn on July 31st, 2013 09:52 pm (UTC)
Found it! It's 55 on the length chart but 51 on the capacity chart. I just double checked their website, because a 55mm cup would DEFINITELY be too long, and it is 51mm.

Thanks! Corrected on the size chart.

Oops, you're right. That's the dimensions for the large, not the medium. And I see the Ruby's length has been corrected on the charts. Good catch.

I've tried both meluna M and currently use a Fleurcup L.
The capacity difference is pretty big, which is mostly why I made the switch. I find the Fleurcup a good length and much more comfortable since it is slightly softer (but not too soft that it is hard to use).

But yeah, Fleurcups are much cheaper, especially if you can catch a sale. IMO, I'd get a fleur for length/capacity and throw a donation at ruby when money isn't an issue.

there are VERY few people for whom a large fleurcup would be too long. most likely i'm one of them, but looking at our previous conversation, it really seems like you aren't. keep in mind that narrower cups stick out more.
