Hello, im quite new to live journal, even though ive been reading the forums for forever.

Here's some info on me: im only 15, still a virgin, hymen fully broken, and ive been using my (small) diva cup (stem cut completely off, the grip rings really irritated me) on and off for about a year. I have a very heavy flow (on heavy days, i have to change a super tampon every hour, and my cup every 3-4 hours, if not it will over flow). Im on the pill, so my flow lasts exactly 4-5 days. And i am not a small girl. I'm about  5'4', 200 pounds (doctor says im very healthy, i just have a low metabolism and i have a naturally large body frame)

I love using my diva cup, on days it want to open. Its either hit or miss when i go to insert it. I'll spend half an hour in the bathroom reinserting it and fiddling with it with it, and it still will not pop open. I've tried absolutly everything, every fold, every position, even tried different times of the day to see if that would make a difference. Nothing will get this darn thing to pop open. The reason i choose the diva cup is for 1). it was cheap and easy to get a hold of 2). I wouldn't say im long "down there" but im not short either, i have no idea where my cervix is, i guess it pretty far up there. And 3). The capacity. The diva cup fits me really awkwardly. One day, it will crawl all the way up there to where i have to push down to reach it, and another day its right at the entrence. The days its at the entrence, it pushes on my bladder pretty bad. I just get fed up half the time and just use a tampon. Which i hate because both pads and tampons make me itch and cause irritation. Which back to the popping open issues. The "c" fold is the only fold that even might open. And it will get half open ( like an straight up and down, as if you smushed it, if that makes sense) and make the suction already. I tried pushing on the cup, and pushing on the walls of my vagina, which kinda works sometimes, but i guess my muscles down there are very very strong. With both the cup half way open and my finger up there, it feels like something is squezing on my finger, and thats when my muscles are relaxed. If i tense up, it kinda hurts my finger and smoshes the whole cup. So when i try to push on the walls of my vagina, it doesnt wanna move, at all. I honestly just think the diva cup is just too big for me, both length wise, and volume wise.

I'm a cheap a$$, and i dont wanna buy a new cup. But it seems im gonna have too. Im thinking about a keeper moon cup, due to its easy to get a hold of on amazon and what not. Its both shorter and longer at the same time due the stem. A good piece of mind in case it crawls up there. And its firmer, so i hear. Or a meluna medium (the sport one really catches my eye, since it seems my muscles are very strong). I already know there isnt most likely going to be a small cup with the capacity of the diva, but im willing to make the sacrifice. I really don't wanna spend more than $30 on a new cup. Let me know what you guys think! :)

If it makes you feel any better, I have the same popping issues with my DivaCup (small). (I'm 19, virgin, with an intact hymen.) I also have better luck with the C-fold, but I still have to spend around five minutes twisting it around to get it to open fully. If not, it either stays squished or dented. I've also tried pressing the walls of my vagina, running it under cold water, trying to get it to open right at the opening, etc.

The only thing I haven't tried, something that is suggested in a popping issues FAQ here, is enlarging the holes of the DivaCup. The DivaCup has some of the smallest holes, and making them bigger might improve the popping open issue by letting it suck in more air as it unfolds. This is just something I've read about and not actually tried, though. However, it is cheaper than buying a whole new cup. (Making the wholes a big bigger will also make cleaning easier.)

I think you're right that we have rather strong pelvic floor muscles. The DivaCup isn't considered a "soft cup". A firmer cup might just work better.

Have you tried laying on your back ? and sort of lifting your butt a bit ? this + origami fold + cold water trick always does it for me.
misskarley on June 30th, 2012 06:49 pm (UTC)
I've only tried laying on my back once to get it in. It didnt go well. I was laying on the bath room floor and i was was wearing a pad before hand so blood was still kind of on the surface. Keep in mind, this was an average flow day, and i still made a mess. And i didnt notice a difference when laying on my back or when sitting on a toilet. And the origami fold doesn't work. It will unfold, but will still be squished when it does, like staight up and down as i mentioned before, and make the suction already. I've thought about widening the holes before, but im afraid of damaging my cup since i have nothing to do it with.

Actually, what i found to work best for me is the cold water trick and the "c" fold. What i do is insert the fold the other way around than what the normal person does with the "c" fold. And as i insert it, i push down kinda hard before i let go of the cup. That seems to do the trick the best for me. But half the time, that doesnt even work.

Now I can do it on the toilet too, but sometimes after a shower, when I'm all clean I lie down on my bed to reinsert. For me, lifting my butt sort of opens my vag like a jaw dropping lol. I bear down (push) too to help the cup open. And definitely, always face the folded part towards the floor. Another fold which works very well for me is half diamond, because it's so tiny and intricate I guess. Just a few ideas. :)

Try flipping your Diva inside out on your low-cervix days when it feels like the cup is trying to escape. Also try facing the fold the other way (up instead of down, left instead of right, etc) to get it to pop open more easily. And some folks have had good luck by enlarging the anti-suction holes around the rim.

If you're considering another cup, compare the dimensions and capacity of your Diva to other cups at the various size charts located at http://menstrual-cups.livejournal.com/tag/faq The US/Keeper Moon Cup has a lower capacity so that might not suit you well. What if you went to a slightly wider but shorter cup like the large Fleurcup?

I agree with all of the above comment, but the Fleurcup : it is actually softer than the Diva, which might cause OP difficulty if she has strong pelvic muscles.

I vote for a large Lunette, because it's firmer, shorter than a Diva, and has a pretty good capacity. On the other hand, a large Meluna, classic or sport, would be firmer and has approximately the same capacity as a small Diva. It's also the cheapest cup. Lunette can be found cheapest at Luneshop.com if it helps OP. I've read it's just under $30.

Thankyou everyone who is trying to help! First off, i left some things out. I feel like the diva cup's diameter is huge! But all in all, its really not that bad. I only use the "c" fold because that's that only one that works, i would love to use the punch down fold since i find the "c" fold kind of umcomfortable. I am really hesitant on buying a large cup for this reason. And as i mentioned before, the diva cup sometimes put pressure on my bladder. I don't think it was because of the firmness, but because of the volume. It just seemed to take up too much room in my vagina. Another reason why i want a smaller cup. I seen on one of Melissa's videos that the meluna has changed their design for the medium and small cups. I'm thinking about the medium. It seems almost as big as the large, just a bit smaller. So i think im going to go for a medium meluna sport when i go to order it. Does anyone know how much the new meluna medium's capacity is? I might have to comment on her blog and ask her. And also, my heavy day only last a day and a half out of the 4-5 days i have my period. The rest of the time, i only need to change my cup every 4-6 hours. And i bleed less at night. So ill sleep for about 9 hours and my cup is only 3/4 full when i take it out. So for me getting a smaller cup will suck, but its not like im gonna have to change it constantly. And it will still last longer than if i were to wear a tampon.

Have a look at the charts, and judge by actual dimensions. There's a capacity chart here as well http://sizecharts.livejournal.com/ . Just because a cup is called "large" doesn't mean it's going to be huge. The medium... well it is a small size really, compared to most brands but the small Diva actually. And it's got less capacity. But most of all, you'll probably struggle to remove it because it's much shorter. See how they compare here :

Thankyou for the link to the comparison pictures!! i had been looking for something like this and couldnt find any of the new desingn! and i never relized that the small diva cup is like the size of the extra large. So i think ill probably just go with the large meluna sport, since its smaller than the small diva as it is.

Well, my mom took me to the store today to get one of those visa gift cards (that's what i always use to buy things online with, it works just like a regular credit/debit card). And i went to go to the meluna website, i get to the final part of my order, and my card gets denied! i guess it doesn't except prepaid cards. Which makes no sense, i had $25 on it, the cup was only 22.97 usd. And thats with shipping. So its not like there wasn't enough to cover the payment. I was pretty ticked off. So i went on amazon and ordered a keeeper moon cup size B. I hope it works out for me! You kind people have been so helpful! :)
