I'm 15 and a virgin. I ordered size 1 Lunette. Today, because I was expecting my period, I tried to use it. I tried the punch-down fold and a mirror (though I'd consider myself very familar with my anatomy). I didn't think I had a hymen until today. I stayed very relaxed (in the beginning, at least). I squatted on the ground and such, but I couldn't get it near in. At one point I let go and it popped (which was excrutiating). I tried to bear down. I feel like my vagina disappeared because I had NO idea where it was. The punch-down fold seemed like the smallest fold to me. After about 10minutes, now crying and in pain, I tried with a finger. No problem. I can handle fingers, that's easy, but the cup seemed impossible. I eventually gave up because I was stressed out, cussing at my vag, and probably tensed up. It hurt sooo bad to sit down and down there still hurts a little bit.
I don't want to wait, but that was such a negative experience, another part of me never wants to try again. I read up a lot before buyingn and I really want it to work out!
Does anyone have advice?

I had a just about the same experience. Crying and Pain... :( I think being a virgin was a big part of it for me. Nothing went into my vagina so I felt like I would hurt it somehow. It took a little time to get used to but it is so worth it. I think you should try it when your bleeding though. That was easier for me.

My period came today n I've tried a few times. I had it in to the stem, but the thought and feeling of slowly twisting it was on the verge of excrutiating, much less taking it back out. Is there a way to comfortably get it to pop open? I was so scared of how it'd feel cuz the first time it accidently did with the rim not completely in and that stuff huuurt!

you don't need to twist or turn the cup! that's only one way of making sure you have a good seal: i've never been able to twist or turn my cups, there's no room! (There is a post about this labelled 'cup myths' in the community faq.

I insert my cup as deeply as I can aiming towards my cervix, then let it open and sometimes push up on the base if it wasn't quite far in enough.

To check it's open you can run a finger around the cup to feel that's it's open, some cup users do a couple of kegels, a squat or a sort of wiggle 'dance' for it to get into place :)

my advice is use some lubricant to help with insertion and relax relax relax!! especially for removal! you can do it! :)

p.s. there have been a couple of recent posts by virgins trying to use their lunettes and experiencing the same things as you, definitely worth reading the advice in the comments!! there's some really good tips for relaxing, insertion and removal :)

hopefully these are the right links:

I support waiting until your next period, if only for the fact that blood is one way to make it slide in easier (water based lube or just plain water are other ways).

My guess is your body probably wasn't relaxed enough, I wouldn't consider squatting a comfortable position for insertion. My first advice would be to try lying down on your bed, resting on one elbow, knees apart. I find it makes a world of difference with how my vag feels. If you're uncomfortable with this, at least try sitting on the toilet. In addition, make sure you pull most of the skin tissue out of the way, and try to bear down a bit (as in peeing / having a bm but not quite) as you're trying to get it in. I've discovered this helps keep everything open. Finally, aim towards your back bone, not up ! this is a common mistake. Oh and interms of folds, Ive heard origami and triangle fold work well for virgins.

Thank you! My period came this morning so I showered and tried again immediately afterwards. I hadn't read this before retrying, but I will definitely try it on my bed next time! I read the aiming thing & kept my jaw down and it helped a ton! I got it half in, but then I hit a spot where it felt like a wall and I couldn't get it up any higher. I tried shifting my aim, bearing down and pushing in, but it didn't get much more in, so I decided to give it a rest (after a few attempts) and try again later. I'm using a pad now because I read about tampons drying you out. That probably wouldn't do much in my favor :p
Thank you!

First, as everyone else has said, it is probably better to wait till your periods. Especially since you cervix may be a bit high when you're not on your periods and it can make removal a bit hard for beginners.

Then, try a different position if squatting doesn't work for you. You can try to lie down, sit on the toilet or anything that works for you.

You should also make sure you are aiming in the right direction depending on how your vagina is (it can be slightly curved) just to make sure it wasn't the problem.

If you've used tampons before, it's a bit different and you definitely have to find a comfortable angle sometimes.

Don't worry about it too much, take your time, it will probably work eventually. I'm a virgin as well and I can assure you that I feel no pain whatsoever because I'm relaxed and take my time. If you feel that it won't work or that it will hurt, just wait a little, take a shower or do something fun before trying again.

Hymens are just a more or less stretchy membranes, try to stretch it out a bit before your periods, it may help. Also, some people find it to be stretchier when they are menstruating so it will probably be ok.

The reason you had so much trouble was cos you were aggravated. Try again another time when your head is in a better place.

Have you read The Virgin's Guide to Cups yet? It's at the Community FAQ.

I did! It was very helpful, especially the aiming part. I got it half in this morning, but then I hit a spot that felt like I was blocked off so I gave up after a few more attempts to try again later.
Thank you!

Make sure to use some kind of lubricant (even just water will help). I know that feeling of "losing your vagina" where you just can't get to the opening anymore. Water or some kind of water-based lubricant will definitely help!

I tried this morning right out of the shower & wet the cup (and I'm on my period as of this morningk and it helped a ton! Thank you
