I use the C fold for most of my cups (large Diva, small Diva, large Yuuki, large Lunette) but I find it just doesn't work with my Melunas (I have a small one and an XL one). It takes a TON of work to get them to pop open, even if I run them under cold water beforehand to make them stiffer. I think I'm going to have to learn some other folds, finally.

I usually have a hard time getting my cup to pop completely open with the C fold and the punch-down fold. I find using the triangle fold works really good, but my favorite, that works the best for me is the origami fold. Since your cup isn't opening because I'm guessing its so soft I'd say the triangle fold might work best.

Iv'e realised that, with my Cuplee, I can't use folds that involve squishing it flat because the cup doesn't get to catch on air enough and therefore has a tendency to stay squished. Triangle fold is the least problematic in that you can sort of unfold it manually with one finger, but I much prefer more intricate folds such as origami, half diamond (my favourite !) and labia fold. I believe the last two require a large, squishy rim.

Melissa has a terrific video to learn new folds in case anyone hasn't seen it yet : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nt6L-POE-b0

That's exactly why I love the triangle fold! For some reason though on my low cervix days it stays partially squished, and I find I never have this problem with the origami fold.

I have started switching off between cups - my small Lunette at the beginning of my cycle and my medium Meluna at the end - but I use the same C fold for both.
Quinn Elisequinnthevixen on May 30th, 2012 03:49 am (UTC)
The C fold worked fairly well for me the first period I used my Diva cup, but for whatever reason I struggled to get it to fully open when I used the C fold during my next period. The punch down works fairly well, but I've had a lot of success with the 7 fold! Thank g-d for YouTube; I probably never would've thought to fold it that way otherwise.
supercrook on May 30th, 2012 04:48 am (UTC)
I've gone with the 7-fold until now because somewhere I read it folded up smallest; probably not true, but it's served me fine. (For some reason with my stiffer cup, punchdown folds have a bad tendency to pop open before they're fully inserted, sometimes when they're barely inserted at all, which hurts like hell.)
m03m on May 30th, 2012 06:43 am (UTC)
My cup sits low, close to the vaginal entrance, *and* all the way up around my cervix. In other words, if you have a lower cervix you can't really answer that question. Low and high are the same in that case.
I picked 'in the middle', but yeah...
juliiie87juliiie87 on May 30th, 2012 10:24 am (UTC)
Yeah, I picked "close to cervix" because that's where it goes, but it's pretty much long enough that most of my vagina is filled... So I guess I could have said middle ? And it doesn't suction itself to my cervix the way some people have describrd, either, so idk about that one.
htebazile10htebazile10 on May 30th, 2012 11:48 am (UTC)
I didn't think of that! Sorry.

Hey, no biggie.

This poll is a great idea - and the results are soooo interesting! Look at that DivaCup, pulling well ahead in the home stretch. *high-fives the Canadian cup* *gives Meluna a guilty smooch*

I agree with m03m about the "where does your cup sit" question, BTW. All three answers could apply to us owners of a low cervix! (In my case I identified as a cervix-hugger though :-)
moonhoney925 on May 30th, 2012 08:28 am (UTC)
Wow, surprised to see so many Diva fans considering the amount of posts regarding people having trouble with them (usually wrong size).

I would have thought that many favoured Melunas.

I think people complain about them a lot because people use them a lot! They're definitely the brand most readily available in the US, and one of the few that I know of that are routinely available in mainstream retail outlets like (some) pharmacies and Whole Foods.

Yes, I'm from Canada and I got the Divacup because it's carried by a large drug store chain here. The only other menstrual cup that I've seen in pharmacies is the Instead Softcup.
juliiie87juliiie87 on May 30th, 2012 10:20 am (UTC)
I agree, people in the US and Canada (I guess the majority here) use it the most because it's the first one they see, unfortunately it's one on the furthest brands from "one-fit-all"... Loong body and tiny anti-suction holes from hell ! Luckily it still works for many. :D
Hello, yes, I am Briam: fringe-howwonderful!lionessvalenti on May 30th, 2012 02:29 pm (UTC)
When I got mine, I basically had two options: DivaCup or Keeper, which they only had the rubber ones at that time. If there was a third option, no one was talking about it on this community (back when it was still called the_keeper!).
Thora: Delvianthoraofthenord on May 30th, 2012 01:54 pm (UTC)
I use two cups for my cycle: Diva for the bulk of it (Punch-down fold), and MeLuna Soft for the end of my cycle because I get drier and the Diva rubs when I remove it (origami fold, but I'm still finding the best fold for it, as it's pretty new!). I was still a virgin when I started using cups, but I didn't have an intact hymen (equestrian).

(I answered the poll with the MeLuna answers.)

I've used my cup for about 7 years, and I still have an intact hymen. Not really having much experience with anyone's hymen but my own, I don't know if it's especially tough and can withstand me not being exactly gentle with it, but it's pretty easy for me to move out of the way. Starting to figure that my hymen isn't going anywhere.
k_kommando_ on May 30th, 2012 04:40 pm (UTC)
i always find hymen questions interesting, because i found out a few years ago that i was born with an imperforate hymen. my mom realized it when i was a few months old, and i had a hymenectomy before i was a year. i didn't ever realize it, but i haven't had a hymen for most of my life!

I use 3 cups - 2 LadyCups and one Yuuki. The LadyCups go in with a regular c-fold, but the Yuuki is the large size for heavy days and the material is much softer. That one goes in with a "hail Mary and jam" method. (Squish it sort of but don't push all the air out or fold it - slide it in and hope it works. It usually does.) I've tried every fold imaginable for the Yuuki, but folding never seems to work since the bugger won't pop back open!
ana.kansassatin on May 30th, 2012 06:14 pm (UTC)
the origami fold sounds intriguing

Diva user here, I almost always use a punch down fold. It is a bit of a pain to get open, but it's he easiest for me to hang onto while I'm inserting it with slippery fingers. The other folds tend to jump out of my hand :D I have used the C fold, but it usually opens up too soon and I have trouble pushing it up after that (my cervix is waaay up there).

Re hymens, is it true that many of us are born without them? I can't remember ever having one. When I first tried penetration (early teens) I didn't bleed or feel any pain except the stretching.
musicmylovemusicmylove on May 31st, 2012 12:24 am (UTC)
I got lucky with the Divacup and just picked it on a whim. I can't say the same will go for everyone else.

OrIgami fold LOVE!
Thanks for this post. It helped me discovered the origami fold and omg, love it! Ive never gotten my soft cups to open with such ease before! The c fold could take me up to 10 minutes to get right (if i didnt 'give up' and end up using a cloth pad) and the origami literally takes SECONDS to get into place. Woooooo hooooo!! Thank you! Thank you!
Lorlorrainec on May 31st, 2012 09:37 pm (UTC)
I answered for my Femmecup (punch down fold, I think). I used a c fold with my Keeper.
