I bought my Lunette 2 months ago but have yet to use it! I sterilized it and everything, but chickened out at the last minute and used the pads I had, swearing to myself that I'd use it for my next period. Well, my next period is here and has been here for the past four days...the first day is pretty light so I said I'd try to put it in then and see how it went...and I couldn't get it in. I'm 30 years old and have had kids; I'm sexually active, but not regularly (enough), so I'm kinda tight down there. I even tried to open my mouth since I've read on here that the slack-jawed approach is pretty helpful as far as being relaxed is concerned. Needless to say, I got frustrated and gave up.

Yesterday, I tried to put it in while I was in the shower and got it in, but wasn't sure if it was positioned right since it seemed to be pretty low in my vaginal canal. My cervix sits low but I was afraid of trying to push it up in there any further because I didn't want it to "disturb" my IUD. I ended up taking it out, of course...shame on me. I might be overthinking things but I'm just really scared of pulling my IUD out or not getting the darned thing positioned right...

This sounds similar to my story, except i don't have an IUD.I had an awful experience the first time i tried my cup, chickened out the next cycle, and then third time was the charm. My advice is to have sex the day before your period. It made a huge difference for me.

It's funny that you say that because I did actually have sex the day before my cycle came! Haha...I actually felt him bump my cervix while we were...um...doing it...and I knew my period would be coming along shortly. I guess I should have put it in then...I hope I will get "lucky" enough next month for that to happen...the sex, I mean. *crosses fingers*

I find it much easier to get a cup in when I'm sitting on the toilet instead of standing up. Try that, it might help.

Okay, I will try that, also! Thank you! :)

That, and even better : the first few times, I found it tremendously easier to insert lying on my back (in the privacy of my bedroom, after a shower), knees splayed, resting on my elbow.
It popped right open every time, because everything felt so much more relaxed down there. Then slowly I learned how to insert sitting on the toilet and finally standing up in the tub with one foot up. It's still the trickiest position though.

Having sex or pleasuring yourself are good ways (but not the only ones) to make sure you relax those muscles. Lying down did that for me.

Yeah, I totally can't get my cup in while standing up - only when sitting on the toilet.

that may have been why I didn't feel like it was in right...gravity and all...I thought about trying it while sitting but thought being in the shower would be better since it would be easier to actually get it in b/c of the moisture...

Yes, water helps. But when you're not in the shower I recommend using a bit of water-based lube on yourself. Not on the cup, because it might slip out of your fingers.

I squat to put mine in, like others have mentioned. I don't insert it on the toilet because I fear dropping it in.
The first several times were more difficult, then I kinda got the knack. Pushing it past the pubic bone then letting it pop open usually works pretty well, for a non-soft cup. Good luck!

I second squatting!

Have you tried being sexually aroused to put it in? Just while you get the hang of it?</p>

I also second sitting on the toilet.

Here's another vote for sitting on the toilet. That's where you are going to do most of your insertions/removals.

Did your Gyno show you your IUD before insertion? (In the package?) It's really surprisingly large. It's not like it's some teeny little thing that is going to slip out unnoticed.

As for "tight down there," "tight" is a function of your PC muscles. Once beyond them, your vaginal walls are more involuntary than voluntary. And that's where your cup sits -- above your PCs. So you just need to relax them for insertion and removal -- and then you can go back to however tight you like to keep them.

I, too, have an IUD and I am a cup user. The thing is that your IUD is well into your uterus and bumping your cervix won't affect it in the slightest. You should take care not to pinch the strings with the cup during removal because pulling on the strings can trigger expulsion or partial expulsion. Break the seal by pressing in on the side of the cup and then gently pull down without pinching the bottom of the cup too far up.
