To me this is bad news because I need a very short cup with a narrow bottom as opposed to a rounded bottom, and the old style MeLuna was the only cup I'd found (after trying Fleurcup, LadyCup, and MeLuna) that was a "cone-shaped" cup instead of a "bell-shaped" cup.

It sounds like the reason they changed it was to give it a greater capacity (30% greater to be exact), but for me capacity is not an issue.  I guess I'm in the minority here as I've read lots of posts where women say the old style small MeLuna was pretty much useless to them, but for me it's my main cup after the first two days of my period.  I can wear it pretty much all day and still not fill it half way.  And, I'll just add that I'm 30 and have had a baby vaginally, and still this tiny cup is perfect for me.  So there goes all of the conventional wisdom about sizes and such!  To each hoo-ha her own, I guess. :-)

Okay, anyway, on to the point of this post.  I took a picture of all of my cups so people can see the new MeLuna size/shape compared to other cups.  So, here we go....

Pictured from left to right:
  • Old style medium cyan MeLuna soft  (my heavy days goldilocks cup, note the unique cone shape and how slender it is at the bottom)
  • New style small pink MeLuna soft  (too long and rounded at the end for me, giving to a friend)
  • Small turquoise LadyCup  (too big & firm (MeLuna soft has spoiled me on softness!)--lightly used and for sale in mc_sales)
  • New style small clear MeLuna soft  (unused and for sale in mc_sales!)
  • Old style small pink MeLuna soft  (my light days goldilocks cup)

So like I said, I'm probably in the minority here because I need a small, short, cone-shaped cup and capacity isn't an issue for me, but I think MeLuna has taken what used to be a very unique cup and turned it into the same as everything else out there.  I mean, look at it compared to the LadyCup--It's practically identical, maybe a little smaller in the middle, but down at the bottom is where size counts to me because the further up you go the less feeling you have.  Down at the bottom is where it's going to aggravate you.  Okay, well, that's my rant.  I'm just thankful that I found out about the shape change when I did because I stocked up on small and medium old styles.  I've got enough to last me until menopause now! :-)

Hope this picture and info will be helpful to others as you wade through the wide, wonderful world of menstrual cups!  :-)

Wait--so the new SMALL is longer than the old MEDIUM? Because according to the chart on their webpage, it shouldn't be...

This is bad news indeed.
sunnyhappyday on October 15th, 2011 07:42 pm (UTC)
Hmm, well, I hate to go against their chart, but the two smalls I got (in the picture) are definitely about 2 or 3 mm longer than the old style medium, and much wider at the base... I know, I was bummed about this too!
sunnyhappyday on October 15th, 2011 07:42 pm (UTC)
Unless they goofed and sent me mediums by mistake, but they were both marked as smalls.
Yamxyamx on October 15th, 2011 07:52 pm (UTC)
And you're really sure the old one you have is M and the new ones S? (Sorry, I don't mean to contradict you, I just find it hard to believe that they'd go to all the trouble of providing such a detailed chart and then put incorrect information in it... Maybe the one on the far left is S, too?)

I had pretty much resigned myself to getting an S when I want to replace my heavy-day M, and just hoping my current S (for all other days) would hold out a long time, but if the new S is longer than the old M, I'm screwed...
sunnyhappyday on October 16th, 2011 02:20 am (UTC)
Nope, the dark blue one on the far left is definitely an old medium, and the pink one on the far right is an old small. If I had the energy I'd take a picture of them side by side so you can see the difference, but trust me the far left is old medium and far right is old small, and they're very different. And the new smalls are pretty much the same as a small LadyCup. Sorry, but hey, there is still hope! When I found out about the shape change, I emailed the company (info@meluna.eu I think) and asked if they had any old shapes left, and they did, so you can probably do that too and still get an old style one... good luck!

Thanks, I'll do that!

hm i think the OP just cut off the stem really flat so that what's left is shorter than 45mm... personally, when cutting off the stem i always ended up with measurements a tiny bit longer than the official "without the stem" ones but i also cut it off more like the basic shape than like this. even basic shape+a tiny nub that i'm scared to cut off :D

I can't believe the new small isn't what it used to be :( I'm another who loves it for all but my heaviest days!
Serpentserpent_849 on October 15th, 2011 06:52 pm (UTC)
oh FINALLY comparison photos!!! thank you!
wow the new small looks..large haha. i've ordered one because the medium sticks out of me due to the conic shape.
yeah they're less unique now...but i think for the majority it must've been a minus. like, i'd always virgins in this comm - if your flow isn't REALLY light, get something else. because there are pretty small cups that hold a lot more and if you're considering the medium, there are 35794 wide cups with a higher capacity.

so if they don't last you before menopause (heavier flow or something), bear in mind that you could try a wide medium length one, like the new large meluna (perhaps filing down the grip rings can help?) or juju or maybe the large lunette... a cup that is wider in the body should be able to sit deeper around your cervix..

Yeah, I had also ordered two of the mediums before the change-- and they ended up sending 4 instead, which was great! The new shape is definitely more Fleurcup-ish... but I already have one of those. ;)

It seemed to me MeLuna really had a niche before, with their different sizes and shapes, and now they're in with the main sequence. Too bad. Maybe if it doesn't work out for them they'll go back-- hopefully they don't throw away the old molds!

It'd be nice if they offered a choice of either. I bought the medium (original stiffness) for its wide-but-short size and conical shape.
sunnyhappyday on October 16th, 2011 02:25 am (UTC)
Hey maybe if enough people request the old style they'll bring it back! :-)
Marty Greenemartygreene on October 16th, 2011 06:09 am (UTC)
Noooo! The smalls from them were the only ones that work for me during sex. This is bad news indeed. Now I guess I gotta hunt down any remaining small stemless that folk might have and not love? I was gonna order a new one soon too...
Melon the Sleepermelonaise on October 16th, 2011 02:19 pm (UTC)
Someone above said MeLuna still has old styles in stock, if you email and ask for them specifically...
mel3cupmel3cup on October 17th, 2011 12:20 am (UTC)
I can't find the meluna chart on their webpage any more, maybe they did bung up their measurements and are editing it the chart? I'm totally confused now, I was going to get one of the new style (my new old style doesn't work) but unless I can be sure of their measurements I am hesitant to buy. If the new style is too much like the mooncup with length it won't be any good for me.

This is sad I was going to buy a small MeLuna after all my financial problems were sorted out. I liked the older shape and wanted a low capacity shorter cup because I have a light flow and I only need even the capacity of my small ladycup on the heaviest days of my period.

We have some of the old and new sizes of the small and medium. They are listed so that you know which one you will receive. There are also size charts on the website.
I have taken a photo of the old and new medium side by side http://www.flickr.com/photos/feminine-wear/6249225248/in/photostream

Two years later =P
Hi there.
I'm new to this community and have never used a cup before. I'm pretty sure i'm going to need a rather short one and i was wondering if you've found any comparable to the old small in size/capacity/firmness.
Thanks for your help and really to everyone for the info in this forum.

two months later :)
hi, the old ones are now known as "meluna mini" :)))
