stem importance to 1st-time user?

I'm interested in trying a cup, but I'm not sure how important the stem is to a first-time user who is concerned about length.

My cervix appears to be about 35-40mm high during my period (which may explain why I found tampons uncomfortable). I see that a MeLuna small is 40mm without handles, and that a ball handle adds 6mm. I am not excited about the idea of anything protruding from my vagina for various reasons.

Do I really need a handle if I have a low cervix and am not squeamish?

(ETA: one pregnancy to term, C-section, early 30s.)
