For those of you who wear cloth pads as backup, how many pads do you own? I was wondering how large of a stash one generally needs if it's their secondary method of protection.

Right now I have two overnights and six liners.

My stash is at about 32. Most are heavy/overnight, the rest are regular for daytime use. I have heavy period and I feel much more at ease having a pad on for those just in case the cup looses suction fears I get.
erica057erica057 on April 4th, 2009 03:10 am (UTC)
How many do you use per day?
Beatrix Kiddoniubutterfly82 on April 4th, 2009 03:27 am (UTC)
Well, during the day usually only 1 or 2 (I don't like any wetness if my cup leaks) and for night usually 1 overnight- maybe 2 if I have a really heavy day and leak while sleeping. So my average per day is about 3.

I have three cloth pantiliners that I use more often when I'm spotting or having other discharge rather than as a cup backup, but I do sometimes use one on my heaviest day while using a cup. I could use more cloth pantiliners - I use 1-2 in a 24-hour period, and I do wash around every other week.

I have ovarian follicles, so I had heavy flow (I'm now on HBC). I used four maxi overnights, two regulars and a bunch of liners (about 8). I used my cup maybe 75% of my cycle. I was looking into getting more liners.

Pardon my ignorance -- I thought that everyone has ovarian follicles?
indigo_dawnindigo_dawn on April 4th, 2009 04:11 am (UTC)
I have about 10 little follicles on my left ovary in the classic PCOS "string of pearls" arrangement and about six larger follicles on my right ovary. In a normally ovulating woman, the ovarian follicle shrinks away after ovulation. Wikipedia explains the pathophysiology in detail under the third bullet point - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCOS#Diagnosis However, I haven't been officially diagnosed as having PCOS, so I don't want to identify myself as having PCOS.

Thanks for clearing that up! :)

I'm not sure how many I have, but I just use one a day for backup. Same for overnight, one a night. If my cup doesn't leak I'll use one over again the next night, although I can understand that might be too sketch for the more hygenic among us. :-)
Meghanmegamuphen on April 4th, 2009 03:34 am (UTC)
I should also add that I probably don't "need" backup (except maybe at night) so much as it makes me feel better. It isn't that I don't trust my cup so much as I don't trust myself to always want to empty it when needed.

I have about 6 of them, one for each day of my period. I have a sewing machine that I'm pretty handy with, so I actually make my own (nothing fancy, just some old clothes I had in the closet). Never used cloth pads before I switched to cups, but now that I use them, one a day is all I need, since my cup doesn't leak; the pads are pretty clean. But I figure I should have them anyway, just in case.

I've got a couple I bought off the mylunette.com people when they were having their International Women's Day sale. I don't really need backup, but it's good when I'm cramping like whoa and I'm just more comfortable with something external!

About three pantyliners which basically covers the entire length of my period. Mostly, the liners are there for when the cup leaks because it’s filled to the brim. In particular, I have one really really really heavy day and that’s when backup is relatively important. But that’s about it.
newselenenewselene on April 4th, 2009 08:06 am (UTC)
I have 16 of them: 4 liners, 6 normal (incl. 2 overnight-ish), 6 overnight.

I bought the 6 normals first with the cup as back up, from 2 different manufacturers and I find 2 of them a bit thick.
The 6 overnight were so cute, I could no resist. I use them as back up at night and at the end of my periods, when I am very lazy.
I recently acquired the liners and I LOVE them! Only 1 per day, because I rarely leak.

Had I known better, I would have invested in more liners than normals, because the liners can be used all the month to capture fluids.
However, you can not know when the day comes you can't use your cup - now I have a good stash! :)

I've got a whole bunch, since I used cloth for a year before trying a cup. I've got 3 overnights, about 10 day pads, 5 absorbency-adjustable pads (great for travel), and 5-10 liners (and I always wish I had more!). If I use the cup consistently, I generally need one or two liners (no waterproofing) each day of my period, not because the cup leaks, but because I'm paranoid anyway, and it's easier than cleaning up the "residual slobber". I'm hoping to get some more on http://clothbank.net/ via trading. (-:

Right now, I have three, all made at home. After my heavy two days, I don't really need backup, and this last period, I went without! Very... liberating? Considering the few times I ever did use a tampon they were guaranteed to leak, so in all my life I have never had a pad free day on my period. I also like to use them when my flow is really really light at the end. I'm eventualy going to make a total of 7, one for every day possible I may be on my period (including a day of being prepared/spotting from my IUD and the last days of just heavier discharge.)

I have not leaked once overnight, even sleeping in long. So really a liner would be all I'd need.
Jackieagraciado on April 4th, 2009 01:21 pm (UTC)
It depends on your flow. Mine is generally two heavy days followed by a couple days of light bleeding.

I have 2 overnights and 2 heavy pads. The last days I could get away with just using liners, but I use liners everyday and don't want blood stains on those. So I have an array of light pads (I could get away with just having 3-4).

Sometimes not pad buying is hard to do. A seller will have an amazing deal or a cute pattern.

I have four cloth liners which have been plenty for backup or the tail end of my period. My favorites are from modernacorn - she now has reversible liners:

Chaosxchaosbutterfly on April 4th, 2009 02:41 pm (UTC)
I have one large, one medium, one small, three wide liners, and five regular liners from PIMPs. I also tend to wear a liner sometimes even when I'm not bleeding (I tend to be a pretty wet woman, and reading and writing erotic literature only exacerbates that), just to help keep my panties clean and help with sweating on very active days. So those 11 pads aren't just used during my period.
Chaosxchaosbutterfly on April 4th, 2009 02:55 pm (UTC)
I'd also like to point out that the liners I wear during my period never get blood on them. I always stir around the cup after putting it in to get rid of the residual slobber, and I've only leaked with the cup once (that one time happened during my first cycle, my second time putting the cup in, which was my first night sleeping with a cup), and I've not leaked since then.

I more wear the liners out of paranoia and peace of mind than out of necessity.
crochetaduckcrochetaduck on April 4th, 2009 07:32 pm (UTC)
I think I have enough cloth pads to last me two cycles without a cup. I clearly don't use them all. I usually use one to two liners a day (or one at night one in the day), or an overnight at night for backup if I'm feeling paranoid, but that's usually overkill. I also like having a break from my cup once in a while, so I use a heavy pad and/or a medium pad or two.
latinanewschic on April 5th, 2009 01:44 am (UTC)
I have two day ones and two lunapanties. I don't usually leak, but they are more for just in case. I'm usually gone all day in classes/horseback riding and other stuff. Sometimes when I'm working, I have a three-hour car ride to get to someone's house, and I'm always afraid I'll leak and have embarrassing moments, so cloth is always good.
miyavi_loli on April 5th, 2009 07:40 pm (UTC)
I have nine liners and use one or two per day as backup.
REGEEregee0304 on April 23rd, 2009 12:59 am (UTC)
My stash has about 4 heavy, 4 reg., 6-light/pantyliners. I use these w/& w/o my diva. I also wear a pantyliner daily. When I was on hiatis from the cup I used these solely. I just started back using my diva and used light ones as backup.
