Cup lifespan

I know that cup manufacturers say that cups last for around 10 years, but why don't they last forever?

How could they possibly wear out?  What is it about them once they get to that age that means it's necessary for them to be replaced?  Do they eventually stop holding their shape/seal?

Is there anyone who has used the same cup long enough for it to need replacing who could let me know what happens?

Is it just that the manufacturers would very much like for us to make another purchase? :D
