I have checked the memories, but might have missed something.

I've been reading about menstrual cups for a while but I only decided to take the plunge and buy a Mooncup(UK) today! I was super excited and thought it would be a good idea to 'practice' before my period arrives!

Anyway, I sterilised cup then went to try and use it- no go.

My fingernails aren't very long, maybe 5mm each, but they kept jabbing me when I tried to insert the cup. Obviously I didn't want to splice myself open with my fingernails, so moved them back a little and the cup sprang open (ouch). I tried this for about 15 minutes and ended up with a sore vagina and a grumpy mood.

Does anybody have any tips for girls with long nails that don't involve cutting my nails off every month? I tried the C-fold and the way of folding the cup where you sort of pull down a bit of the cup's rim and fold it from there, but they both resulted in me having to hold the rim down when I was trying to insert the cup, thus getting jabbed with fingernails, thus Mooncup springing open.

Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for any help!

For me it took clipping my nails pretty short for the first several cycles, and then I was able to do it without clipping my nails. It just took a lot of practice.

I've since switched from the Keeper to the Diva and I'm starting this process all over again as the Diva sits differently when I want to remove it.

Make sure that your nails are filed super-smooth. Get a buffing cube and a three-way buffer from the beauty supply store, then round and buff all your nails to the smoothest possible finish.

Also, as the poster above noted, try cutting your nails for the first few periods. I might suggest cutting your nails and buffing the ends two or three days before your period is set to start, so all the sharp edges have worn off.

I can see that long fingernails would be annoying. I cut my fingernails short (piano player here...) so I don't have a problem, but I would second the previous commenter. Try cutting them the first few cycles and ease into long fingernails as you get good at insertion. :)

I just have to watch what angle I have my nails at, and I'm fine.

I already have short nails but I was using acrylics to try to grow them out when I first got the cup, and I had to get rid of those pretty quickly! I find cup insertion much, much easier with short nails. At least file them down so that they're not sharp... that should help a bit. Sorry I'm not more help.

I know they weaken them a lot (and they did) but I bite my nails if they're readily available for me to nibble on. And they're super short. heh Gross, I know.

Perhaps a latex or nitrile glove or those wierd finger condoms they sell at the pharmacy for cuts where a bandaid won't stay on and for inserting suppositories.

I would also suggest the origami fold, if you haven't tried it already. It's really about the smallest of the folds, and it's worth a shot if you don't want to cut off your nails (though, I hate to say it, you may have to eventually).

The trick with the origami fold to avoid poking yourself is to hold it as low on the cup as you can while still keeping it folded while you insert it.

Hmm I have the same probelem, I found every period I would have to cut my nails. I always did when using tampons so its not too different for me with the cup. It is annoying though!

I have long nails too, not overly long...just nice long if that makes sense.
I had the same problem, I was afraid id splice my vag open and trust me I did scrape the dickens out of it a few times!
So I try and keep my nails filed smooth as possible. Keeping them filed has helped a bunch. But the best help from that is experience. Just getting the hang of if is going to make it easier on you.
For the first few cycles, right before your period just trim a tiny bit of nail down and file them smooth. I always put some olive oil on mine after as it helps smooth them. Do that untill your a pro at insertion and extraction. Well I am certainly no pro yet but I have gotten better at not taking layers of hide of with my nails, which is a huge improvement!

I've had my Diva for three cycles, and I use the punchdown fold. I had to cut my nails for my first try, but I haven't bothered for my last two periods, and my nails are pretty long, and I've been fine. Maybe it just takes getting used to it.
