So, I just bought some Instead Softcups as a step towards getting a reusable menstrual cup (need to do more reasearch to decide which one). I put one in before yoga this morning and haven't gotten around to reading the instruction booklet until this afternoon. when I did read it I discovered at the END of the booklet that you aren't supposed to use them with IUDs.
Anyone have experience with these and their IUD? I am really hoping nothing happens when I take it out and I know a lot of you do use cups, in general, with IUDs with no problems. I guess I am just looking for some reassurance that I can use these with my Paraguard. Ugh.
I have also called the office who put in my Paraguard but not sure what they will say...
Thanks!
The story is that I got my first IUD, a Flexi-T 300, in March 2009, had no periods until March 2010 (due to intense fuck-ups from being on NuvaRing for three years), and then was using a large Lunette for most of my periods, which were regular, until I yanked out my IUD in late February 2011. Now, before getting an IUD, I had only one cup, the small Diva I got in October 2005 that was my first cup. I never had any complaints, absolutely loved it, but I had read that Lunettes were better for IUDs due to the large holes and capacity. The large Lunette was extremely difficult to maneuver inside my pussy, though, since with its size there wasn't a lot of room left for multiple fingers to work with any dexterity, and I credit its size with my expulsion--basically, having to yank down hard before breaking the suction, which pulls down the string (Flexi-Ts only have one), and then having to collapse the cup to get it out, trapping the string inside it and pulling it out. I bought a small Lunette over the course of this year as well, since using a large Lunette even on my lighter days seemed unnecessarily abusive to my vag, but I had no luck getting it to sit right and not leak. Somehow it seems my vaginal canal is long enough (and the small Lunette is short/narrow enough) that it permits the cup to tilt pretty severely inside it? I'm not sure, but I tried at least 10 good tries, and never got it to work.
Thus, when I got my new IUD, I retired the Lunette, and attempted to give my IUD the "settling in" period of a few months so often recommended by these LJ communities. However, I had long car rides ahead of me at the end of April, and was bleeding through a sea sponge tampon + large pad within an hour and half, so I started using cups again. I went back to my Diva, figuring that I'd be able to be more careful with it since I was so familiar with removing it, and since it was much narrower than the large Lunette and would allow my fingers to slide up alongside it.
Fellow IUD/cup users, I wrestle with the little shit of a Diva every time I need to empty it, and when I removed it just now, I had a bit of a panic attack because afterwards when I checked my cervix seemed way too hard (plastic T sinking down where it shouldn't?) and the string had definitely been pulled out from behind my cervix, a sign that there was some pretty gnar suction happening. When I empty my Diva, I have to put two fingers in my pussy, pinch the cup between them, almost bend it in half across the middle as I try to break the seal, and then finally pull it down. Half the time (like today) I just can't break the seal before pulling it down partway. I think it's really necessarily when removing with an IUD to break the seal before pulling down, but it is so fucking difficult with this cup.
So, I ask you:
1. Any cup recommendations? Do you think this would be solved by simply buying a new Diva, since the ones manufactured in recent years definitely have bigger holes than the one I bought in 2005? Should I give my small Lunette another shot/anyone have recommendations for getting the stupid thing to work? Any other cups I should try?
2. Any tips for getting the cup's seal to break without pulling it downward, and ideally without requiring two entire fingers up my vag (since those + cup is not super comfortable on a twice daily, not-at-all-turned-on-while-it-happens basis)?
(x-posted to
Long story short: I bought the Diva bigger size. I had my first child 18 months ago (hence the stage 2) and have always had an uber heavy flow for a few days and then crazy light flow for another 1-3 days. I didn't used to think my cervix was high, but!
Okay. Here are my issues (and I realize that I've only been using the Diva for two cycles now and there's a learning curve, but the issues I'm having are making me already want to go back to disposables...): a) I had to cut off the nub b/c it was so uncomfortable. It feels awkward to have to reach that far inside of me to pull out the cup. Is the Diva much stiffer than others b/c it's quite hard most of the time to break the suction. But it also doesn't flare out all the way/pop open all the time, even when I try to turn it when inserting...and it doesn't turn once it's in, so I usually just try to wiggle it. It feels like it's stretching me out and I can always "feel it" when it's in and rubs pretty roughly around. I'd be okay with this if it was the only issue. b) It leaks. Sometimes just a little (pantyliner) and sometimes a lot (read: wearing full pad while also having the cup in). It seems like it's inserted correctly and pops all the way open, but still leaks. And when I try and take it out, the cup isn't even all the way full (or maybe it's because the suction is so hard-core that I have to almost fold the Diva in half in order to get it out), and then there's blood everywhere. c) Every single time I exercise (not even that; sometimes it's just when I'm walking at a medium pace to work...or riding my bike to the store): the Diva cup "pushes itself out." We're talking: Whenever I get to where I'm going, I automatically have to go to the bathroom to reinsert. After the first month, I heard that it might be b/c my muscles are weak, so I did a bunch of Kegels. But the same thing happened the next month. I walk to work pretty much every single day (or ride my bike). It's better for the environment. It's better for my pocketbook. It's better for my hard to stay healthy body. I will not continue to use a cup that causes me to go to the bathroom a half hour after I insert it simply because it doesn't fit right. It's not like I'm running a marathon and it jiggles out. We're talking just walking (and walking funny trying to keep my legs together so it doesn't push out).
I'm considering a Lunette Selene (I'd have to look on my wishlist to make sure that's the correct name, but it was suggested I try the Lunette smaller cup b/c I believe my cervix is lower for reasons that are TMI). I'm just not sure what to do. Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
Preferrably: I'd like to not have to spend more money, as I really don't have much. However, I'm more than willing to purchase a different cup if it'll work out better. I'd want a cup that's comfortable (perhaps I need a cup that's not as stiff), doesn't hurt to take out/put in (read: with the Diva, it often takes three to four insertions to get it in right...and by that time my woman-business is sore), holds enough that I don't have to change it but once while I'm at work (or preferrably not at all and just while I'm at home, but I could deal with it), and it certainly needs to stay put when I'm walking around.
Another awkward question: When removing it, how do I do it? I had to cut off the stem b/c the stem was so painful/uncomfortable (a gal on another board worded it perfectly where she said it feels like a finger constantly sticking out of your vagina, catching on things and rubbing the wrong way). Now, I have to cram both fingers up there almost to the top to break suction and TRY to pull the cup out without spilling blood everywhere. a) This hurts. My fingers are fat and when you take two fingers and a cup, that's a lot of width up in there. b) It just seems like there's got to be a better way. By the time the cup is out, most of the blood has spilled out into my canal anyway. It's not only messy at the time of (and UBER embarrassing trying to wipe blood off my fingers before rushing to the sink to wash my hands...much less unsanitary b/c I still need to touch the toilet door handle, etc) but also messy afterwards. Even if I get the cup back in correctly and have tried to clean up, there's all of that extra blood all the way up and down my woman'business which then leaks out slowly.
If it's still in fine, my plan is to ask her to cut the strings, hope they don't poke my husband, and then decide whether to continue with the cup or not.
If it's out of place and has to be removed, I will ask for the copper iud, since I have a lot of side effects with mirena (but hasn't been quite bad enough to change otherwise). My concern is with having heavier periods, I really want to use the cup on one hand, but on the other, it is extremely painful going in, and I hate the adjustment period, and am super concerned that if this happens shortly after sex, I could wind up pregnant. This would be AWFUL, and I don't want to risk that.
Other background: my only birth control options are mirena and the copper iud. I plan to have the IUD for about two more years, then have 2 kids, then hopefully my husband will have a vasectomy and I can use the cup worry-free.
Thanks!
distressedI was so excited when I finally got my Diva cup the other day as it took a couple of weeks to arrive. I had my periods when it arrived so used it right away. I am having so much trouble with it. I can insert it fine but it just won't stay in. I found my cervix and believe it is quite low as I didn't seem to have to put my fingers in too far to find it. I can feel all around it and know it has opened up properly. I can turn it right round (although I find it a little difficult doing this as I don't seem to have too much room with my fingers in there too). My problem is the minute I move the thing just seems to get pushed out. I am 35 and have had two children vaginally so have the size 2. Has anyone else experienced this? Any tips as I am starting to get very frustrated.
Thanks
Cindy
I think my cervix is pretty low. I can reach it easily with my index finger. There is quite a bit of suction with the Meluna, I can break it easily but definitely more suction than the Diva. I don't have a heavy flow so I don't know that my cervix is taking up alot of the cup and the leaks is oactually verflow. But it seems like it just isn't all going into the cup?? There is stuff in the cup but also leaking on the outsides. I don't know what is the problem. Any suggestions??
Thanks!!
I was watching some funny tv shows (Spicks and Specks, and The Gruen Transfer), and I laughed so hard I almost...well...giggled my cup out.
Ever had that happen to you?
I've had a small Divacup for about a year now. I was super excited at first just to get a cup. Sadly, it just hasn't been working for me as well or feeling as comfortable as I wish it would.
The punch-down fold has worked best for me so far but the thing's still kind of difficult to insert and always pops open a few minutes after (which is not painful, but inconvenient). The thing that annoys me most is that it slips down gradually while I'm wearing it. I've completely cut off the stem and it still pokes me, while moving around, sitting, whatever. I'm not sure whether this is because of the length, or the seal or what. After several cycles I switched back to tampons- which leak way more but I wasn't able to feel them at least. Tampons really suck though, so I decided to give the cups another try.
I've done some research and I think I would be better off with a Lunette. Small, probably. I'm 21, no kids, non-virgin. I'm not quiiiite sure about my cervix- I'd say medium, but the Diva was giving me issues with leakage (I'd have a fair bit of leak but not much inside the cup). I have a pretty heavy flow at the beginning of my period, so I would consider a larger size if that would help with leaking. And this might be a stupid question, but can a larger or wider cup stretch you out at all?
I just wanted to know if anyone has had these issues with the Diva, or made this particular switch? Is the Lunette more comfortable, effective, etc. compared to others? Also what's your favorite online source to buy from?
Thanks ladies!!
I have spent hours searching this forum and keep scratching my head as to what to get. I just purchased a Large Lunette from a nice gal off this forum. Funny thing is, I rec'd it today and didn't realize it would be slightly LONGER than the Diva 2 turned INSIDE OUT. Forgot about that when I was checking measurements. I just finished my flow so haven't even tried the Lunette yet, but knowing the Diva is too long, I don't think it will be much different. Plus it is stiffer than my diva. I already 'feel' my diva inside at times, so I don't think I want anything stiffer.
I'm looking for something just like the Diva - silicone, soft & squishy - yet shorter than about 52. My flow is apparently not very heavy as I can keep the Diva2 in for 6+ hrs on my heavy days, so it seems I could use a smaller capacity cup. I can't seem to figure out what cup would be like this after hours on here.
Here's what I've deduced so far with the shorter cups:
MeLuna MED 45x45 - sounds too firm for me. I also would rather silicone than TPE.
Lunette SMALL 41x47 - not sure if it would work after giving birth and being 'stretched out'?
MooncupUK Small 43x50 -- not sure 2mm would be noticeable given my cup is 1/4" too long.
Femmecup 45x50 = same as above?
Does anyone that has had a child vaginally and is over 35 use a SMALL Lunette or other small cup?
Any suggestions would be great appreciated!
I know there's a little tension with the Lunette/MPower thing going on, I admit, I'm a little irked myself. Before this came up, Lunette started a contest on FaceBook, I (heart) my Lunette. I submitted pictures of the hat I made and it won me first place! $100 at the Lunette store :)
I'm pretty psyched about it, and I thought it was cool that I got the e-mail when I was on my period. Hehe!
I was looking for some tips about how to deal with a cup and having a IUD as I plan on getting one soon. I don't want to give up my cup! This is my first cycle using the cup and I freaking LOVE it! Is there anything I can do now to practice and prepare for having an IUD? What do I need to look out for? Any special tips and advice to achieve harmony between my cup and soon to be IUD? Anything would be helpful. Thank you all so much in advance!
I realized with the help of all the info posted here that my cervix is extremely low. In fact, I think at certain times of the month, I am almost prolapsing. I've had two children and carried both of them very low.
After studying the sizing chart , I got a UK Mooncup (large size) and it works better. I cut the stem off entirely. For the first couple of days of my period, it works well, but then the next few days, it gradually rides lower and lower, and if I cough or sneeze or sit down the use the bathroom, I have to nudge it back up inside me. I can almost always feel it against my labia.
I've been kegeling like crazy for months, and it doesn't seem to be helping.
So last month, on the last day of my period, when I was really only spotting a little, I was wearing the cup while out at a park with my 2 young children, 18 months and 3 and 1/2 years. The three year old suddenly stripped off his clothes and took off running, apparently deaf to my calls to come back and put his clothes on. --What on earth goes on in their little pea-brains sometimes?? :-) As he was about to round the curve in the path where I couldn't see him anymore, I grabbed the little one, strapped him into my backpack child carrier, and took off running after DS1.
And right then, the entire damn cup popped right out of me! As if I wasn't already pissed about our little naked chase around the park...now I was REALLY mad! ;-) I guess I can giggle a little about it now, but...
I'm just glad it wasn't earlier in my period when there would have been a cupful of blood pouring down my leg.
So any ideas about how to get this to work better? It almost seems like I need a cup that is wider and shorter.
Does anyone have suggestions? As far as positioning, I usually insert it, run my finger around the top and make sure my cervix is inside the cup--it pretty much just sits down IN the cup, it's so low.
Like I said, I've done kegels like crazy the past few months. I even bought a KegelMaster to make sure I was doing them right and hopefully increase strength and tone faster.
This month I'm afraid the leave the house until my period is over. Grrr.
aggravatedI've got some questions and hopefully someone knows. After buying the larger sized Diva (I'm 34 & had a baby 2 yrs ago), I had some initial luck but then lots of issues with expulsion, irritation, leakage, etc. (I never lost my cup in the toilet, but I actually lost it
( in my pants once! ))So thank goodness for you ladies, I learned about the inside-out Diva trick, which made a huge difference on the irritation issue, and no more expulsions so far.... But it's still too long, especially when I'm sitting crosslegged on the floor, which I do a lot. So I'm trying to decide between Femmecup (one size), Lunette (large), and MooncupUK (large).
So my questions:
1. When I turn the Diva inside out, it goes from 57mm long (stemless) to ~51-52mm long, by my measurements. But it still hangs out a bit. The Femme, Lun, & MUK all start at 50-52mm (stemless), so they might also hang out unless inverted. I want to know how much shorter they would get? The base of the Diva has a thick tight curve, and I imagine that a cup with a thinner broader base might not shorten by as many millimeters when inverted. Does anyone know how long any of these cups would be when inverted? And oh yeah, anyone know how easy it will be to grip any of these buggers when inverted?
2. Is an inverted cup going to last as long? I don't want to ruin a cup 3 times as fast because of strain on the silicone....
3. Are vaginal muscles just looser when you sit cross-legged on the floor? Is this destined to become a problem? Or is this really going to Kegel away?
4. Does the bell-shape vs. uniformly wide shape make a difference in terms of staying in if width is also a concern? (kuradi8 calls them "hoop skirts" here: http://community.livejournal.com/m
Thanks in advance!!!!!!!!!!!
( Read more... )Just one question, does it seem normal to have it so high, to the point where I can barely touch the end of the stem? Thx for this board, I couldn't have done it without all of your input!
I purchased a Divacup (size 1) about eight months ago and have been pretty satisfied with it. I have never had any problems with insertion or getting it to pop open, and can easily get my finger in alongside it to "swirl" it. The only problem I've encountered is that I apparently have a short vagina, and the Diva has always been too long. As per the recommendations here, I flipped it inside out, and while it still sticks out of me it's not really uncomfortable. I have considered getting another shorter cup and when I saw the trial Ladycup offfer, I got a small bluecup. I've used it for about a week and a half now (waiting for my period to come, and for my period) and it hasn't split yet. However, it appears that the diameter is just too small for me. While having a bowel movement a few days ago, it POPPED OUT of me into the toilet. I was really suprised, as this had always been a concern for me while using the Divacup, but had never actually happened. After fishing it out and cleaning it up, I reinserted it and went on with my day. I figured it was just a fluke, until the same thing happened to me AGAIN this afternoon. The first time, I kind of felt it when it when it happened, but this time, I didn't even know it had fallen out until I went to take it out to empty it and it WASN'T THERE. I pictured my vagina as a waterslide, with my cup sliding happily out of me into the toilet.
So, I really like the length of the Bluecup, the softness as compared to the Diva (thought it does make a bit more slippery and difficult to remove), and the huge, easy to clean holes. I'll probably continue to use it along with the Diva, depending on the day. I guess my vagina is just short and squat, which is not something that seems to be a problem with most people here, but maybe some of you can relate : )
I think one of the biggest fears for IUD users who want to start using a cup...and for cup users who are thinking about an IUD... is whether or not cup use encourages IUD expulsion.
So here's a poll for cup users who have or have had an IUD.
Hopefully it will ease some fears and provide a clearer picture of cup use, IUDs, and expulsion.
( long poll - click here )
He told me that he used to fit cervical caps, which rely a lot on suction to work, but that he didn't think that menstrual cups relied on suction to work, since they are one size fits all. While there may be some suction on the vaginal walls, he said, there isn't likely much suction on the cervix, and he said that with his knowledge of the anatomy and of the menstrual cup, its shape, and the way it works, he didn't really see how a menstrual cup would cause expulsion. He said there was no reason they shouldn't be perfectly safe to use together.
I am having some issues with my Lunette cup and thought maybe someone could offer me some help and advice on how to deal with them.
This is just my second period since receiving my cup. The cup arrived in the middle of my last period, so I only used it for the last few days (after the heavy bleeding was over). I found it comfortable and really didn't have any issues with it, except for getting over the learning curve of how to insert it comfortably, how to remove it easily, etc.
This time, though, is quite different. This is day two of my cycle and already I am questioning if what I am experiencing is normal. One issue that I have is this: I can sneeze and cough with the cup in and have no problems with it. The cups doesn't move or anything. BUT - when I go to pee, the cup actually falls out! I am not straining or pushing in any way to go, just that by relaxing enough to be able to relieve myself causes the cup to fall out during the process. Twice now I have had to fish my cup out of the toilet. Both times I have had to boil the cup to sanitize it before reinserting it. Is this normal? Does anyone else have this problem. I have just tried to remember to remove the cup every time I go now to avoid having it fall out.
My next issue is this: I have done all I can to remove as much of the stem as possible, but I still feel poked from time to time, especially when I sit down. Is the end of the cup supposed to stick out of the vagina during use, or am I supposed to have the cup high enough that it is completely inside of me? In order for it to feel completely comfortable, I usually have it all the way inside, but then my vaginal opening closes around the bottom of the cup and then when I sit down the pressure of me sitting causes that delicate skin at the vaginal opening to get poked by what is left of the stem. It is very painful and can be rather embarrassing when I am in certain company. Any thoughts?
And finally, my last issue is: With my last period, since I was only using the cup on those last few days with very light bleeding, I had no problem when removing the cup. Only a tiny bit of bloody liquid was in the bottom of the cup and was easy to just pour out onto a wad of toilet tissue and flush. This month is quite different. Yesterday and today was rather heavy, thicker bleeding. Every time I have removed the cup, a long line of thick, mucus-like blood will be connected from the cup to my body. I end up having to take a wad of toilet tissue and wipe the blood from my body to disconnect it. Because of this, when I reinsert the cup, my hand gets practically covered with blood, and also I am finding that I still need a panty liner as a back up to catch the little bit that sloughs off from beneath where the cup is. Any thoughts on how to avoid this happening? I don't know if it is because of the method I am using to remove it or what.
Thanks in advance for your help.
I got my diva cup about 3 weeks ago, and about a week after getting a mirena IUD inserted. At first I was afraid to use them together, but reading the tags and memories gave me confidence, and I haven't had any problems. Although my doctor trimmed the strings VERY short, to the point that I can have a hard time finding them.
Anyway, I wanted to add my experiences to the general knowledge of the group and any future members.
curiousShe is 38 and had a child last year. She got the Size 2 DivaCup (over 30, post birth) and she says it feels like the cup is falling out of her. She can't tell if it's just the stem sticking out or if the cup itself is actually sticking out.
I have suggested that she try wearing the cup inside out (so the stem won't be protruding) to give her a better idea of whether it's the stem or not. I also suggested that she do some kegels and see if that seemed to help with this falling out problem.
I looked through previous posts, but I didn't see this issue (Or I didn't know where to look)
She really wants to love her menstrual cup and has asked me for a review of my lady cup as soon as it comes in because she is considering getting a different cup, but I don't know what to say in the mean time.
Any thoughts?
Today is my first day. insertion and expulsion are fine. but it sure fills up quickly. I'll need to look for posts here about that issue. The insert said it usually only needs to be emptied every 8 hours. mine was FULL in 4. off to search archived posts...
I decided to blog my New Adventure with the Moon Cup. and I allowed to post that here? well, if not- I'm sure someone will delete it. But if anyone is interested in my Sangre Saga- it is here: http://mitasa.blogspot.com/
i've read through lots of posts, but haven't found a way to solve my problem. i have a diva cup and i have the fairly common problem of it liking to "hang out". but not just that---i think i can't really get any suction at all---i can just pull it out easily by tugging at the bottom.
i'm not having my period today (while i was trying repeatedly to get it to stay in) so that may influence the "shape of things" etc, but the last time i tried it (my last period---august of 2005---ack!), i also had this problem. i got it to suction in once, and then it was higher up and just sat great, but i can't seem to replicate that. i've tried 7 fold, c fold, punch in fold, origami fold (though i can't get the bottom to fold up like she shows in the pics), i've tried putting it in low, putting it in high, stirring...
i'm not totally sure if it's popping open completely. sometimes it seems very squashed, no matter how much i rotate. sometimes it seems more open. it's never still "folded"...
any suggestions on how to get it to suction in?
tia!

I've been meaning to post on here for months but I haven't actually got round to it until today.
I have my IUD fitted last June, and used a Mooncup with it. After reading lots and lots of info on here and on the IUD Divas community I decided I was happy using both considering the possible risk of removal.
Now, if you're not a complete dork, very tired at 3am in the morning and at the phase of your period where the Mooncup really comes into its own (when your flow is light and tampons would be a scratchy nightmare and pads are hot and uncomfortable) so you're not really thinking about menstruating, then you wont make the mistake I did. But, if you are prone to this kind of nonsense, heed my warning!( Read more... )
