This is the best resource of information about cups and all the pos + neg experiences about them that I have found on the net and I'm so happy that I found it. I've had so many questions that have been answered here. And I'm sure to have more in the future.
I've been researching cups since sometime around July when I saw the Soft Cups while shopping online (I think I was looking for a better deal on tampons). After the horrible experience I had trying the Soft Cups (thankfully I bought a trial pack, damned those things hurt!) I wasn't sure if I wanted to try something similar to that again. But then a month later I got to doing more research and found another block that listed several of the available sizes and brands and other information about cups that helped me choose which one I thought would work for me.
I got my cup in the mail last month just after my period so I was kinda bummed. My cup is a lunnette size 1 Selene and this is my second day using it. A couple of dry runs before my period actually started helped me feel comfortable with the concept and maybe prepared my nether regions for something stiffer and wider than the super absorbency tampons (which I struggled with for the first few months of using tampons). I was sore for a while (and sitting on ice packs to reduce the irritation was so comfortable) but, I really do like it. Still 'teething' (as I see it's called here) with 'residual slobber' (<-- love that term) and leaks and a few questions came to mind that I've not found in the forums under any of the topics.
Anyone know what allodynia is? In short, it's a painful response to something that doesn't normally cause pain. And what really sucks is that of the few areas that I have this 'thing' is along the triangle of the front of the crotch. Looking at a basic anatomy drawing of a person, there's that triangle in the center where the crotch is indicated. Well, the two lines that run between the crotch and the legs (were the legs meet the crotch), I suffer anywhere from annoying pain to severe pain that won't go away, like someone's trying to hang me up to dry by putting strings about the thickness of my thumbs in those spaces and lifting me really high off the ground. And unfortunately, there is nothing there for me to pull away no matter how hard I 'try'. This whole mess started sometime in early 2010 and I have not been able to wear panties of any kind else I suffer in horrible agony. So the next best thing was biker/athletic shorts with a tiny triangle gusset for the crotch.
So what does all of this have to do with anything? Well, it's one reason why I looked into cups because tampons can only do so much, especially when they leak and get all over the place. And the shorts I started wearing aren't really built to have pads or liners on them. I'm looking for ideas to work around this, especially with the reusable liners. Sanitary belts is an interesting concept but I'm afraid that I'll experience the same thing with the pad that panties cause. And any panti, even boyshorts, will cause this annoying, painful problem to return full force, within the first 5 minutes even. Heck, on bad days even jeans will cause a flare up.
One other thing that I forgot to include before posting this is interstitial cystitis. Anyone else deal with this misery? Sometimes I think the cup aggravates it and I'm wondering if anyone else who suffers with said misery and what their experiences have been with it.
